Academie Guitar
Bert Harbison has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Azusa Pacific University. He taught music K – 8 in the public schools in Texas for 18 years. He was the first to start a classroom guitar program in the public schools in Temple ISD at Lamar Middle School. Mr. Harbison is a certified Suzuki guitar instructor for beginning and advanced courses through the Austin Classical Guitar Society. He has been the assistant director of Mariachi at Temple High School responsible for guitar, vihuela, and guitarrón. Mr. Harbison also performs with a local Classical guitar ensemble, the Cloverlea Quartet, which performs a wide variety of repertoire.
Suzuki Guitar
Suzuki Guitar is initially based on the student modeling the teacher, finding the proper hand placement, memorizing repertoire, and intense listening. Following Dr. Suzuki’s premise that little children first learn their language before they learn to read. The teacher is responsible to provide a good teaching environment where the student can flourish. Method and technique are taught through repertoire.
Traditional Guitar
Traditional guitar for beginners through advanced is offered to students ranging in age from 6 to adults. Popular guitar books published by Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, Berklee School of Music, etc. are used.
Bass and Jazz Guitar
Beginning Bass guitar instruction is offered for players age 11 and up. Basic fingering, 1st position notes, right-hand picking techniques, and scale patterns are taught at this level.
Teacher recommendations are preferred.
